Prof Anne-Marie Kilday, vice-chancellor at the University of Northampton since 2022, has stated that closing courses to address financial challenges would only be considered as a final option. Speaking to the BBC, Prof Kilday outlined the university's current financial situation, including a £19 million deficit. The University of Northampton is engaged in a consultation process exploring potential cost-saving measures, which include the possibility of discontinuing certain courses.
However, Prof Kilday emphasized that all other avenues to reduce the deficit have been exhausted, making course closures a last resort. The university anticipates financial pressures in the coming year, despite tuition fee increases. In November, the University of Northampton informed students that a consultation regarding maximizing graduate outcomes would commence in 2025. A university spokesperson acknowledged the significant challenges faced by the higher education sector and assured students that support would be provided to explore alternative options if any parts of their courses were to be eliminated. Despite these pressures, Prof Kilday expressed confidence in the university's future, stating that while a deficit exists, it is being effectively managed, and there are no concerns regarding the university's long-term viability. She also highlighted the university's economic impact, suggesting that for every £1 of income generated, the University of Northampton creates more than £4 in economic impact across the UK
