Joe Brolly criticized RTE's analysis of the Kerry vs. Galway match, specifically targeting Paul Flynn's cautious commentary on goalkeeper Eamonn McGrath's debut performance. Brolly felt Flynn and the panel were too lenient in their criticism of McGrath's mistakes during the game.
Joe Brolly didn't hold back as he criticised RTE's punditry team for their remarks during Kerry 's 2-17 to 3-14 victory over Galway on Saturday evening. One of the major talking points heading into the match was Galway manager Padraic Joyce's decision to hand Eamonn McGrath his first start in the maroon jersey between the posts.
McGrath endured a difficult evening, with several of Kerry's goals being attributed to mistakes on his part. Whilst providing analysis for the match, former Dublin footballer Paul Flynn described McGrath's selection as 'interesting,' before exercising caution in his critique of the goalkeeper by characterising his first start as an 'eventful debut.' In his column for the Irish Independent, Brolly attacked Flynn for essentially failing to properly criticise the 21-year-old, whilst also taking a swipe at Flynn's punditry more broadly: 'I think it's interesting,' said Paul Flynn , which was more than could be said for the punditry..., reports the Irish Mirror . 'It is not unfair to say it was a disaster for Eamonn, not helped by the way the panel patronised him at half-time and after the game. 'An eventful debut' was how it was put. 'His kick-out was butchered. He kicked two '45s wide. He gave a four-foot handpass to the Galway corner-back putting him in dire trouble, leading to the interception that caused the first Kerry goal. He dropped the ball to Clifford for Kerry's second goal. 'Eventful?' Brolly certainly didn't mince his words, appearing more irked by Flynn's refusal to criticise the young goalkeeper than by the goalie's actual performance. As for McGrath, this fledgeling will undoubtedly glean valuable lessons from his debut league match as a goalkeeper, and at just 21, he still has a promising career ahead of him.
