Comedian Peter Kay was forced to eject two hecklers from his Manchester show on Saturday after their repeated disruptions made it 'impossible to continue'. Kay first asked security to remove a man shouting 'Garlic bread', his Phoenix Nights catchphrase, and later had a woman ejected for calling his name repeatedly. Kay explained his actions, stating that he attempted to address the situation humorously but the hecklers persisted. He emphasized the importance of considering the experience of the paying audience when disruptions become unbearable.
Peter Kay has stated that he had 'no choice' but to request security to remove two hecklers during his show on Saturday, explaining that their 'repeated disruptions' made it 'impossible to continue'. The comedian asked staff at Manchester 's AO Arena to remove a man who shouted 'Garlic bread', his Phoenix Nights catchphrase, and then directed them to eject a woman who persistently called his name.
Kay recounted feeling 'treated like a terrorist' while the woman, who Kay referred to as Lisa Riley due to her resemblance to the actress, asserted that they had been 'disrupting from the very start'. He explained that he 'did my best to address the situation and made light of it, as any comedian would, but unfortunately, their interruptions continued'. He further detailed his attempts to appease the situation, stating: 'I then tried to ignore them, hoping they'd settle down, but when the disruption persisted into the second half of the show, I asked the audience around them if they were being bothered by the noise. They all shouted 'yes,' and when I asked for a show of hands, at least 40 people raised theirs.'Kay acknowledged the woman's resemblance to Lisa Riley, saying: 'The lady who was escorted out did bear a striking resemblance to Lisa Riley, though I don't see how that's an insult.' He emphasized the importance of prioritizing the experience of the paying audience, stating: 'As a comedian, you never want to eject anyone, but when repeated disruptions make it impossible to continue, it's important to consider the experience of the rest of the audience, who've paid to see a show without interruption,' he said. The comedian was captured on video making jokes at the expense of the first heckler before taunting him as security intervened. Kay declared the man 'garlic dead' and pulled up a chair to observe his ejection. When the woman started shouting Kay's name and 'We love you, Peter', he queried the audience 'Is she a nightmare?' before calling for security staff to remove her as well. 'Go on, Lisa Riley,' he told her.The ejected woman shared with the Manchester Evening News that she believed Kay's comment was a jab at her weight because Riley 'has lost a lot of weight and looks great but she used to be a bit bigger'. She expressed feeling self-conscious about her body and stated, 'I'm self-conscious about that so to go to a show and feel like you're having the mick taken out of you because of your weight, I was just a bit shocked,' she said. Social media responses were divided. One user who claimed to be present at the show expressed 'losing a lot of respect' for Kay due to his handling of the hecklers. However, another fan asserted that 'people were cheering him for throwing out the heckler' and 'it had to be done'. A third audience member responded to the initial negative statement, declaring: 'I think everyone who was there will agree you did nothing wrong! It was a fantastic show and we loved it!
