Shropshire Council has approved plans to build 21 affordable homes on a former National Grid depot in Ludlow.
A total of 21 houses and flats will be built on a Ludlow industrial site after council planners gave permission for a former national grid depot to be knocked down. The development proposed by Shrewsbury based TC Homes will see an existing two storey concrete office and garage building on the site at Aquila House on Riddings Road razed to the ground - with a scheme of affordable homes built in its place.
The approved scheme is set to include 8 one-bedroomed flats alongside a further two, three and four-bedroomed houses. In supporting documentation, developers said the site provided convenient footpath links to Ludlow and said its location already within an established residential area made it a sustainable development within the town. The scheme received five expressions of support from residents but also one objection, from Ludlow Civic Society, who said cement rendering on two of the houses was inappropriate for the area. 'In theory, we support the application to build affordable homes. However, visually we take issue with the rendering of two of the houses, which rather than adding interest detracts from the unity of the development,' they wrote. 'On the practical side, Ludlow's old sewer network is over-subscribed and the town's infrastructure, such as doctors' and dentists' practices and schools, is also over-loaded. We feel most strongly that any new development should be required at least to build a water treatment service.' However, after the developer agreed to revert to brick facing, Shropshire Council's planning officers also agreed with a report by Severn Trent which confirmed that the existing sewer connection at Dahn Drive would be sufficient for the development.'There is no in principle planning policy objection to an affordable housing development on this previously developed site within the market Town of Ludlow,' read the planning officer's repor
