“Our new government has taken laudable first steps yet, like every other nation, Australia’s AI capability and governance gap in the public and private sectors is worrying,” Hill said.“Decisions that shape the future of society cannot be left to the private interests of technologists or multinationals alone.”
She said the government’s pending review of the Online Safety Act would examine the changing online environment, expressing particular concern about “deepfake” intimate images created by AI programs. Rowland said these were already covered by the Online Safety Act, allowing the eSafety Commission to issue takedown notices and fines to platforms.
