Online betting agencies 'tuning and targeting' young punters as problem gambling rises
Recently published research from the Australian Institute of Family Studies shows this level of advertising is having a huge impact on Australian punters.
"We found around 1 in 5 young women bet for the first time after seeing or hearing an ad and 1 in 7 young men," she says. Associate Professor Nicholas Carah, director of Digital Cultures and Societies at the University of Queensland, says sports betting agencies are flooding traditional and social media with ads for a very specific purpose.
Nick Carah says sports betting agencies are trying to normalise gambling by creating content for and advertising on social media.Watching the Friday night footy across the couch from Mr Davies is Ethan Fletcher, 19, who also admits his gambling habits could be unhealthy. The system allows punters to generate their own odds by wagering on nearly every aspect of a single game, from total points scored to a particular player's possessions, in one bet.

‘Fight isn’t over’: Transgender participation in junior sports ‘still rife’ in AustraliaBasketball Australia made the right decision banning a transgender athlete from competing in elite level competitions, but the fight “isn’t over yet,” former NBA championship player Andrew Bogut says. The Rogues Bogues Podcast host said he is still concerned over the wording of Basketball Australia’s media release announcing the decision to refuse Lexi Rodgers' application to join the Kilsyth Cobras in Victoria's NBL 1 South competition. “When you look at local, junior sports – this is still rife, it’s still everywhere,” he told Sky News host Paul Murray. “This is a win for semi-professional sport, but from what I hear from the community, people messaging me, there’s netball leagues, rugby league, basketball, volleyball, whatever it is, there are males that have transitioned to female that are playing in those sports and hurting young girls.”

‘Blatant pork barrelling’: Mobile blackspot saga shows ‘major hypocrisy’ from LaborSky News host Sharri Markson says the mobile blackspot saga is a “blatant case of pork barrelling” and shows major hypocrisy from Labor. A January 2023 Department document states a detailed analysis has been undertaken of the 54 locations selected by Communications Minister Michelle Rowland to receive funding. Appendix A lays out the target locations and issue descriptions with a column for specific areas affected by coverage issues - however, for 20 of the locations on the list, there is no known issue listed. “This is major hypocrisy from Labor because, as you know, they pursued and rightly pursued, the Coalition government over sports rorts and car park rorts, but they've done the same thing with funding for mobile phone blackspots,” Ms Markson said. “Unlike sports programs, having mobile phone coverage if you’re in a bushfire zone or a flooding zone is a matter of life and death.”
