Sky News host Sharri Markson says the mobile blackspot saga is a “blatant case of pork barrelling” and shows major hypocrisy from Labor.
A January 2023 Department document states a detailed analysis has been undertaken of the 54 locations selected by Communications Minister Michelle Rowland to receive funding.
Appendix A lays out the target locations and issue descriptions with a column for specific areas affected by coverage issues – however, for 20 of the locations on the list, there is no known issue listed. “This is major hypocrisy from Labor because, as you know, they pursued and rightly pursued, the Coalition government over sports rorts and car park rorts, but they’ve done the same thing with funding for mobile phone blackspots,” Ms Markson said.
“Unlike sports programs, having mobile phone coverage if you’re in a bushfire zone or a flooding zone is a matter of life and death.”
