Olympics: Australia has shocked the world and taken a solo lead in the medal count after a record day 1 for the country.
Australian golden girl Ariarne Titmus returns to the pool to battle her emerging rival Mollie O’Callaghan on Sunday evening AEST for the women’s 200m freestyle heats.
But she won’t get much time to celebrate the triumph, diving back into the pool this evening for the 200m heats, followed by the semi-finals at 6am. Titmus won gold in the 200m freestyle event at the Tokyo Games three years ago, also claiming silver at last year’s championships in Fukuoka. That race saw her come second to compatriot O’Callaghan, who broke the 14-year world record with a 1:52.85, a record Titmus took back at the Aussie trials with a 1:52.23.Elsewhere in the pool, Emma McKeon will be fighting for another medal in the women’s 100m butterfly final at 4.45am, while Aussies including 400m medley pair Brendon Smith and William Petric are in action.
It would be a major surprise if the Aussies medalled on Monday morning with McKeon, who qualified fifth fastest, the best chance.7.15pm — Men’s 400m Individual Medley Heats 7.43pm — Men’s 100m Backstroke Heats 4.45am — Women’s 100m Butterfly Final 5.15am — Women’s 100m Breaststroke Semi-finals
