I woke up one day and realised I had no hobbies, so I swore to try new things
When was the last time you were bad at something? I don’t mean making a mistake at work or failing to do a press-up. When was the last time you deliberately tried something new, knowing full well that you would look like an absolute idiot? Not recently, I bet – and yet that’s how I found myself going for my first skateboarding class at the grand old age of 35. As outrageously nimble roller, I was working up the courage to go over a speed bump the approximate height and size of a teacake.
Sure, I sometimes ate out at restaurants, but only occasionally. I don’t count going to the gym as a hobby, only an activity I reluctantly entertain to stave off the slow creep of age-related deterioration. As for team sports – don’t make me laugh. That dream died after I nearly got concussed in a school netball match.
Then the risk of public embarrassment began to outweigh the thrill of trying something new – what if the poetry wasn’t good? Why did I keep drawing hands that looked like overstuffed bratwurst? Was scrapbooking kind ofSo I put aside these childish hobbies and started concerning myself with whatever teenage girls cared about, which at the time was mocking the first person to get a training bra and leg hair.
I can only speak for myself, but I think there’s something about the current world that steals away the child-like ability to lose yourself in pointless activity. It’s already hard to muster the enthusiasm to learn something new when you have to hold down a job and pay rent.
