A Builth Wells pottery club has been asked to design new artwork for a wall featuring a popular mural depicting local characters waiting for a bus. The original mural will be replaced after the owners of the wall, Craig Hamilton Architects, expressed a preference to paint over it in white.

A Builth Wells pottery club will be asked if they can come up with ideas for some new artwork for a wall where a mural depicts local characters waiting for a bus. Builth Wells HWB, an afterschool pottery club run by MOCACymru Not For Profit Social Enterprise, would need to sketch any ideas and then have them agreed by the owners of the wall. Craig Hamilton and Diana Hulton of Craig Hamilton Architects have said they would be happy to hear proposals to redecorate the wall opposite the Groe.

The clerk of Builth Wells Town Council will approach the pottery club after she did not receive a response from Ysgol Calon Cymru teacher Lorraine Davies, who initially asked the council if they could work together on repainting the mural. Town clerk Louise Hammond contacted Craig Hamilton Architects about the mural and they are willing to listen to other ideas. They said their preference would be to paint over the mural in white and they had considered it a couple of times but held back because of local sensitivities about the mural on the wall. Mrs Hammond said: “I have not heard anything from the teachers Mrs Davies so I will contact the pottery club but they would need to come up with some ideas and do a sketch of them and it would have to be agreed by the owners of the wall.

The latest incident involved someone setting a pair of underwear on fire and stuffing them down the toilet. Town clerk Louise Hammond expressed concern that these incidents are becoming increasingly frequent and costly, and warned that a successful arson attempt could lead to serious consequences. Mayor Councillor Gwyn Davies acknowledged the problem, which appears to be linked to groups of individuals after school hours. Hammond stated that Builth Wells is not alone in facing issues with public toilet vandalism, with other town councils experiencing similar problems and some even handing back their toilets to Powys County Council.
