In the supplement world, certain nutrients are repeatedly paired together. One popular grouping is magnesium and vitamin D, which has gotten a lot of buzz lately for reportedly helping with symptoms of anxiety. Magnesium and vitamin D are two separate nutrients, but they have a reputation for working together. “Magnesium is important for the absorption of vitamin D in your body,” says Keri Gans, R.D.N., author of The Small Change Diet.

If you want to take magnesium and vitamin D at the same time, Gans says you’re just fine to do that—you just don’t need to take them together. “And unless you are deficient in one of them, you don’t need to take it at all,” she says. Warren agrees that you’re OK to take these supplements together. “It doesn’t counteract their effectiveness,” she says.
