The Canary Islands are set to be hit by 'historic' protests on April 20 as locals take to the streets to demonstrate against 'overtourism' - and UK tourists have been warned
A travel alert has been issued to UK holidaymakers planning trips to Lanzarote and Tenerife after April 20. This comes as locals and island residents are preparing for a large scale protest against the growing number of tourists visiting their islands.
He mentioned that visitors "come to enjoy themselves, to spend a few days and to leave their money in the Canary Islands". He stressed that protesters should "be responsible in this action" as the influx of UK visitors every spring and summer brings in substantial revenue.He said: "What we cannot do is attack our main source of employment and wealth, because that would be irresponsible," once again emphasising the need for "common sense and calm".
