Miners drawn into geopolitical minerals war
The world's mining industry is being drawn into a critical metals trade war with nickel, lithium and rare earths in the front line, but there might be more to come as global free trade fades, tariff barriers return, and government subsidies are weaponised.First shots in a battle for battery metal dominance were fired in Australia last year when nickel mines were forced to close thanks to low cost competition from Chinese controlled smelters in Indonesia .
Plans for new nickel smelters in Indonesia are being changed at the request of the government to limit Chinese ownership to less than 25% or risk being classified as providing material from a "foreign entity of concern" under the US investment promotion scheme the Inflation Reduction Act .
