Recent satellite images of Cuba reveal upgraded intelligence installations at four military bases . The images suggested the possibility of Beijing establishing a network of facilities that could potentially be used to spy on the US.
“Without access to classified materials, pinpointing the specific targets of these assets is nearly impossible. Nonetheless, the growth of space-monitoring equipment at sites like Bejucal and Calabazar is notable given that Cuba lacks its own satellites or space program,” the report stated,Bejucal, identified as the largest among the four sites by CSIS analysts, initially gained prominence during the 1962 Cuban missile crisis as a storage base for Soviet nuclear weapons.
The final site, El Salao, seems to still be under construction. Its proximity to the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay near Santiago de Cuba, along with the structures being built, may raise concerns for Washington. Pentagon press secretary Major General Pat Ryder expressed confidence in meeting security commitments during a briefing on Tuesday, noting that China will likely continue to enhance its presence in Cuba and assured that efforts to disrupt these activities will persist.
