Driven by record solar and wind installations, China has achieved its 2030 renewable energy target six years ahead of schedule. This achievement highlights China's commitment to green energy and its ambition to become a global leader in the clean energy transition.

China has achieved its 2030 renewable energy capacity target six years ahead of schedule, driven by a record pace of installations for solar and wind power in recent years. The country, the world's largest emissions polluter, set a goal in 2020 to have at least 1,200 gigawatts of solar and wind capacity by 2030. This target has been surpassed, just four years after it was set, thanks to government support for renewables and a flood of cheap components and equipment from domestic manufacturers.

China saw record solar and wind capacity installations in each of the past two years, with last year's capacity additions being particularly significant. Solar power generation capacity surged by 45.2%, while wind power generation capacity rose by 18% compared to 2023, according to data from the country's National Energy Administration. This jump in installed solar and wind capacity outpaced the overall increase of 14.6% in total installed power generation capacity in China. By adding about 277 GW of solar capacity and another 80 GW of wind capacity in 2024, China beat its own record of annual renewable capacity additions.China's commitment to clean energy is evident in various large-scale projects. At the end of 2024, the country connected one of the world's largest solar power projects by capacity, the 4-GW Ruoqiang PV project in the Taklamakan Desert, to the grid. This project, developed and operated by China Green Electricity Investment, is part of the government's plan to peak its emissions by the end of the decade. Furthermore, China continued to be the world's biggest market for low-carbon energy investment in 2024, attracting $818 billion of investment, a 20% increase from 2023. This investment exceeded the combined investment of the U.S., the EU, and the UK, demonstrating its leading role in the global transition to clean energy. By June 2024, wind and solar energy collectively surpassed coal in capacity for the first time ever. This trend is expected to continue, with solar capacity projected to surpass coal as China's primary energy source by 2026

China Invests Heavily in Grid Expansion to Reduce Renewable Energy WasteChina Invests Heavily in Grid Expansion to Reduce Renewable Energy WasteChina is significantly increasing its investment in grid expansion by 19% last year to address the issue of wasted wind and solar energy. Investments in grid infrastructure surpassed investments in generation capacity, highlighting the government's priority on efficiently transmitting renewable energy to consumers. This expansion aims to minimize 'curtailment,' where excess energy production is wasted due to insufficient transmission capacity. China is tackling this challenge by constructing ultra-high voltage transmission lines, enabling the transportation of renewable energy over long distances to areas with high demand.
