A cleaning expert said you shouldn't use traps to catch fruit flies as there are much more effective methods out there – here's how to banish the pesky little insects for good

While they can be a pain all year round, the tiny insects can be more prevalent during summertime. This is because they thrive in hot weather and are fond of ripening fruits and vegetables.

As well as being attracted to fermenting and decaying fruit, they can also be found around other sugary substances and decaying organic matter. They are common in homes, restaurants, and anywhere food is stored. She was sent in a question by a woman called Liz Olive – who had tried vinegar, making a sugar and washing up liquid trap and even a light that is supposed to attract them. Sadly though, they kept coming back.

She explained: "Every time you put out a trap you are attracting more fruit flies from elsewhere. Once they get to your house, they will have a brief snack of either the vinegar/sugar solution or a little bit of spilt juice, or a minuscule drop of something oozy... and then they will trot off and they will lay their eggs, and they will lay up to 100 a day, every single one of them. Those eggs will hatch.
