Coronation Street star Bev Callard opened up about her battle with clinical depression and the crucial role her husband, Jon McEwan, played in her recovery. Appearing on Good Morning Britain alongside hosts Ed Balls, Susanna Reid, and her spouse, Callard, who famously portrayed Liz McDonald for almost three decades, shared her harrowing experience working on the soap 15 years ago. She described being so depleted that she ended up hospitalized and undergoing electroshock therapy.
Callard, who is also an ambassador for the mental health charity Mind, emphasized the importance of talking about mental health and seeking help. She praised her husband, Jon, for his unwavering support and understanding during her darkest moments. Jon, overwhelmed by his wife's vulnerability and helpless to alleviate her suffering, took the extraordinary step of training to become a counsellor. He wanted to learn more about her condition and equip himself to better assist her. Susanna Reid commended Jon's dedication, acknowledging the profound impact his efforts had on both Bev and himself. Callard further highlighted the importance of support for partners of individuals struggling with mental health, emphasizing that they too need resources and recognition. She revealed that they received invaluable help from Coronation Street colleague Denise Welch and her then-husband, Tim Healy, who provided a much-needed outlet and distraction for Jon.
