'It is hard work, can be draining, and intrusive, but very rewarding when things work out'

A Nottingham couple have fostered 13 children as well as four kids on respite placements over the past five years. Dianne and David have given a home to seven sets of siblings in the past few years, and after an emotional journey they have now given a pair of three-year-old twins a permanent home.

This meant the couple had to face the difficult decision of whether the keep the three siblings that were placed with them or have the twins back with them. This is because a foster carer can only foster a maximum of three children at once.Dianne explained: "This totally broke our hearts as we were powerless to do anything, sadly we made the hard decision to give notice on the siblings as we knew we wanted to give the twins a permanent home.

Of these children, most of them were adopted or went back to their birth parents or family members. The third placement the couple looked after was a set of three siblings, which included an 11-month-old baby and two girls aged two. Diane explains that the reality of fostering is that it is a 24/7 job. She said: "You don't get a break, if you are ill you can't have a day off sick, you can't just pop out for a meal or to the cinema - they really become part of the family. Fostering is the most rewarding job when you see the positive outcomes and the impact you can make on a child’s life."
