This is not only frustrating when you fancy tucking into a cucumber, but it can also feel like you are wasting money. Thankfully, experts at consumer website Which? have shared how best to store cucumbers so you get way more life out of them. When buying cucumbers at the supermarket, they come wrapped in plastic. The seal around the cucumber is often seen as being in place for hygiene reasons, but it also serves another purpose. It helps to keep the cucumber nice and fresh for days longer. The Which? expert shared: "It all comes down to ripening, environmental factors and packaging. "For example, a cucumber wrapped in plastic stays fresh for about 14 days compared to just five days unwrapped." Cucumbers should be kept in the fridge, and ideally in the crisper drawer. They need the plastic wrap to retain their moisture and prevent them from drying out. The plastic is said to act as a second skin, preventing dehydration. While in the store, the plastic wrap helps protect the cucumber's skin from bruising. Yet cucumbers should avoid being near certain fruits and vegetables. Cucumbers and tomatoes pair well together, but they are not well-suited for storage. Tomatoes emit ethylene gas, which triggers the ripening process, and cucumbers are highly sensitive to this. Exposure to the gas can cause the cucumber to become soft, yellow and spoil. To eliminate this risk, keep cucumbers in the fridge and tomatoes at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. Tomatoes can be stored stem-side down to prolong freshness. Once cut, tomatoes should be refrigerated to help slow spoilage. Cucumbers are best kept in the fridge, but you still need to be careful what temperature you set your appliance to. Ideally, they should be in temperatures between 7C and 10C. If they are stored at temperatures below 4C for too long, they can develop chilling injuries, which manifest as water-soaked spots and a shortened shelf life.
