It has been slammed for causing traffic chaos, but one regularly user says it is already nicer and much safer navigating the streets of Manchester city centre

A commuter has leapt to the defence of the Deansgate cycle lane saying he already feels much safer navigating the streets of the city centre.

That stretch, from Quay Street to Beetham Tower, is not yet open but traffic is already down to one southbound lane, with temporary lights currently in place at the end of Deansgate. James, 26, lives in south Manchester. He doesn't own a car and instead travels into the city centre by bike several times a week for work and social activities.

"You're putting your life in the hands of others, and often in the hands of people who don't care about you. When you're on a properly segreated path, you don't have to worry about that. James, originally from Beverley in East Yorkshire but who has lived in Manchester for nine years, said he believes use will increase once the scheme is completed and is connected with other routes around it, such as on Oxford Road and Chorlton Road, off the Regent Road roundabout, which is the town hall's ultimate aim.

"It's about building for the future. That's what happened in the sixties. Buildings came down to make way for the Mancunian Way and to widen roads for cars. That caused outrage then but it was just the way things were going."Oil is going to run out in 40 years and there isn't enough mineral in the ground to make an electric vehicle for everyone. So at some point lots of people will have to move into walking, cycling, or getting public transport.
