A sleep expert has weighed in on the shocking findings of a new study

Struggling to get a good night’s sleep could be an early warning sign of dementia, a new study suggests.

The REM phase, also known as rapid eye movement, is when the brain processes memories and emotions. The research suggests that those who take longer to fall into this deep sleep phase may be experiencing an early symptom of Alzheimer’s disease, the research suggests. However, Dr Elder warns that this research doesn’t tell us whether dementia causes changes to sleep or if changes to sleep might increase the risk of developing dementia – or both.

REM follows three phases of non-REM sleep, each deeper than the last. The four phases take 90 minutes or more to complete, depending on age, and a person may cycle through them four or five times in a typical night. Those with Alzheimer's were also more likely to have delayed REM sleep and were also found to have higher levels of toxic proteins found in people with the disease.
