Deeps Jagdev has started hosting walks for the breed in a bid to build owners’ confidence after the new ban which sees them having to be muzzled and on a lead in public.
A dog trainer who wants to change the image of XL bullies turned heads when she took six of them on a walk around a park.
The mum of two, from Bothwell, Lanarkshire, runs weekly sessions at Lanarkshire’s Strathclyde Country Park alongside Saint, her five-year-old XL bully and Staffordshire bull terrier cross. “It’s also a chance to show the public that there are responsible owners and dogs who are trained well.” In January the SNP leader announced that his government would “replicate” the ban which began in England and Wales and that Scottish owners of XL bullies will now be subject to similar safeguards.From August 1 it will be illegal to own an XL-bully type dog in Scotland without an exemption certificate.
Laura Finlay, 31, was with one-year-old Daisy added: “Since being in the muzzle, she has already had two dogs trying to attack her. But it’s the law and it has to be done.”
