Matthew Wilson was sentenced to 16 months in prison for affray after encouraging his friend to attack a man who intervened in an assault on another person. The incident occurred in Manchester city centre when Wilson and Alex Fraser, who has since died in custody, were observed boasting about their involvement in last year's riots.

A drunk thug goaded his pal into attacking a Good Samaritan who intervened in an attack on another man. Matthew Wilson was drinking in a pub on Deansgate, in the city centre, with Alex Fraser, when a man walked past.

On the opposite side of the road a second man, who was waiting for the bus, ran over to help, telling the pair to stop, Manchester Crown Court heard.“They shouted at him ‘What are you looking at’ and told him to ‘f*** off’ before he saw Mr Fraser take a bottle from his pocket,” said Kate Gaskell, prosecuting.

The court was told that co-defendant Alex Fraser has since passed away whilst on remand in custody. Sentencing judge, the Recorder of Manchester, Judge Nicholas Dean KC said: “It is very sad, he was a very young man. As the defendant is deceased, that concludes his case.” Alex Bennie, mitigating, said his client had an issue with alcohol that stemmed from the deaths of his parents at a young age. He said he first met Mr Fraser when he had gone into the city centre and the pair were drinking together.
