The Winter Fuel Payment is usually a support package between £100 and £300, but it has been boosted by £300 this year
A payment of up to £600 is set to arrive from the start of next month with millions of households put on alert.
Gas and electric prices remain a concern for many in the UK as the cost-of-living crisis continues. And with colder months on the horizon – and Storm Babet bringing even more bad weather - many who have put off turning on their heating will be forced to take action. It comes as food banks could hand out a record more than one million emergency parcels this winter, according to projections from the Trussell Trust network.
The support helps those born before September 25, 1957 with heating costs during winter and is potentially worth as much as £600, depending on people's circumstances. The DWP will start making payments from November 1 but some people may be waiting a while longer before they receive the cash. If you’ve had a Winter Fuel Payment before, you do not need to claim again unless you’ve deferred your state pension or moved abroad. Full details on eligibility and payments are available here. Anyone who doesn't get a letter during October but thinks they are due the Winter Fuel Payment is advised to check their situation.
