The Ombudsman has recommended payouts of up to £2,950 but campaigners hope to get more

The Government has responded to calls for "financial redress" for the WASPI generation of women. The Women Against State Pension Inequality campaigners are demanding compensation for the millions of women born in the 1950s who were impacted by the hike in their state pension age from 60 to 65, and who were not properly informed of the change.

Plaid Cymru MP Ben Lake, one of the supporters, separately sent a parliamentary question to Commons leader Lucy Powell about the issue. He asked if she would "facilitate a vote on proposals for financial redress contained in the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman report on changes to women's State Pension age, published on 21 March 2024".

She added: "The Government is taking the necessary time to properly review and consider the Ombudsman's report, given the significance and complexity of the issue. Once the Government has outlined its approach, opportunities for the House to debate this matter would be considered in the usual way." "There is no perfect solution, but there would seem to be broad support for a rules-based system of compensation with a degree of flexibility for cases where women have experienced direct financial loss." Former SNP MP Alan Brown, who was unseated by Labour in the General Election, also put forward a bill that would mandate the Government to provide compensation to the affected women.
