The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is urging individuals receiving legacy benefits to apply for Universal Credit as the transition reaches its final phases. Officials are focusing on supporting vulnerable claimants during this process, offering an 'enhanced support journey' and utilizing various methods to ensure contact. The DWP aims to transition all legacy benefit claimants to Universal Credit by March 2026.

The Department for Work and Pensions is urging benefit recipients to heed a crucial letter and to get in their application. As the transition from legacy benefits to Universal Credit reaches its final phases, officials are now turning their attention to help the most vulnerable claimants move over.

He said they have moved over approximately 100,000 out of 900,000 ESA beneficiaries that need to move over, leaving around 800,000 still to migrate. If you need any help applying for benefits, many charities can offer help such as Citizens Advice. If you would prefer a home visit from the Department for Work and Pensions , this can be arranged through referrals from such charitable groups as Citizens Advice or Age UK. There are also benefits calculators available online to help you work out how much you could get, including one on the Turn2us website.

He said that at present the system works quite efficiently, with approximately 95 per cent of ESA claimants moving to Universal Credit receiving payment in full within a month of submitting their application. Individuals whose benefits will decrease due to the transition are safeguarded by a transitional protection, which supplements their payment to match their previous amount.
