Nearly one million pensioners have until December 21 to qualify for a backdated Winter Fuel Payment.
The Department for Work and Pensions is urging nearly one million people over 66 to check their eligibility for Pension Credit in order to receive this year’s Winter Fuel Payment. Launching a new campaign to drive awareness of the under-claimed means-tested benefit, DWP also confirmed that claims made before December 21, 2024 - which later turn out to be successful- will receive a backdated Winter Fuel Payment.
The UK Government is also launching a Pension Credit awareness week next month to help identify households not claiming the benefit, and encourage pensioners to apply by December 21. “We are working closely with the Scottish Government to make this as smooth a transition as possible, and more importantly ensure eligible pensioners continue to receive support with a considerable Pension Credit uptake campaign across government and partner organisations.”
During the Week of Action in September, the DWP and its partners will be tackling some of the myths that may stop people applying, such as how having savings, a pension or owning a home are not necessarily barriers to receiving Pension Credit. The benefit tops up income to a minimum of £218.15 per week for single pensioners and £332.95 for couples - more if a person has a disability or caring responsibilities.Other help if you get Pension CreditMixed aged older couples and Pension Credit In May 2019, the law changed so a ‘mixed age couple’ - a couple where one partner is of State Pension age and the other is under it - are considered to be a ‘working age’ couple when checking entitlement to means-tested benefits.
