.When you embark on an Expedition, you’ll drop into Limveld, the new Elden Ring Nightreigns map that’s loosely based on Limgrave from the original Elden Ring. Though much of Limveld remains the same between runs, it shifts and morphs in subtle ways whether that’s the type of enemies you’ll come across, the location of points of interest, and the type and rarity of loot. But it can also change in important ways courtesy of more map-altering events known as Shifting Earth. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the key locations across Limveld and breakdown what Shifting Earth events are all about and what to expect from them. For more help taking on your first few Expeditions, check outDotted across Limveld are permanent points of interest that serve as a way to earn Runes to upgrade your Nightfarer, earn Dormant Reward to improve your character with passive buffs and perks, loot better weapons, and pick up items in preparation for the final fight against an Expedition’s final Their positions on the map change between Expeditions from a set pool of possible locations which you’ll grow to learn over time. Note that all of these locations are marked on the map with unique icons. A useful tip to know is that if you tap Details when the map open, you can see what type of loot is available in each location, including any specific affinities or ailments, which is great way to pick up items and weapons that align with the weaknesses your chosen Expedition’s Nightlord.Every instance of Limveld has three churches. In each one, you’ll find an altar that will grant you an extra healing flask when you interact with it. Regardless of your route through Limveld, you’ll want to make a stop at one or two churches at least along the way.The larger counterpart to the humble Church, the Great Church appears several on every incarnation of Limveld. It’s teeming with low level enemies and occasionally a mini-boss, typically a Golem Warrior giant, and is a reliable source of Sacred Seals, useful if your squad includes a Revenant or Recluse.Evergaols are similar to those in the original Elden Ring. You’ll come across up to six Evergaol every time you visit Limveld. They house a mini-boss that when defeated provides useful passive buffs and perks. However, you’ll need a Stonesword Key to unlock an Evergaol so keep an eye out for one when looting other locations.Modeled on Fort Haight from Elden Ring, you’ll typically find two Forts when exploring Limveld. These are styled as mini-dungeons inhabited by mobs and mini-boss. They are a great source of runes, loot, and Dormant Reward buffs, but you’ll also find a map up in the keep that will reveal the location of treasures and Teardrop Scarabs, the latter a source of Talisman.Located in the north and south of Limveld, Tunnels pretty much do what they say on the tin: a coiling network of caverns and passageways that delve deep underground. Much like in Elden Ring, they are home to Miners, but also Trolls, which when killed have a chance of dropping Smithing Stones, key items for upgrading weapons at Smithing Tables. When exploring Tunnels, keep an eye on the Night’s Tide circle as it’s easy to get stuck inside with no route out other than walking straight into those health-sapping blue flames.Ruins are, well, Ruins. You’ll find multiple instances per Expedition and each one is home to a specific enemy type ranging from Albinaurics to Perfumers. Much like encampments and forts, Ruins are solid farming territory and typically include a mini-boss for some useful passive perks. Don’t forget to follow the stairs down to find several chests full of loot.Encampments are enemy hot spots that offer a wealth of Runes and loot but are also typically home to Merchant and Smithing Table so are well worth visiting. The only issue is that you’ll need to fight through dozens of enemies. They are also home to several mini-bosses that all need to be defeated to unlock the Dormant Rewards. Expect to encounter Flame Chariots, Banished Knights, and Misbegotten Warriors. You’ll usually come across two encampments per Expedition.A close to a safe haven as you’ll find in Limveld, the Township is home to a Merchant and a Smithing Table so are worth popping into before a day-end boss fight. They also house various types of loot and the odd weapon. On occasion, weak enemies prowl the area but are easily dealt and a welcome haul of Runes.Only appearing once in Limveld per Expedition, Sorcerer’s Rise is similar to the ones found in Elden Ring – you’ll need to break a seal that’s positioned nearby to get inside. But when you do so, you’ll find various loot that tends to favour magic-wielding classes.As close to a legacy dungeon as you’ll come across in Elden Ring Nightreign, the Castle is always found at the centre of Limveld. Trolls chucking hulking pots from the battlements, dozens of lowly mobs, and the home to desirable loot, Castle’s are a must-visit near the end of Day 2 if the circle allows it. There are several mini-bosses, most notably in the underground portion of the Castle. A quick tip: after defeating the underground boss, follow the path up past the Site of Grace to find an extra Dormant Reward in a chest.As you explore Limveld, the map will populate with several other icons. Here’s quick breakdown: Marked by a dragon head on the map, Field Bosses are fierce enemies that though tough to beat, are a bountiful source of Dormant Rewards such as weapons, passives, and more.These appear on the map as trees and represent Spirit Hawks. Interact with one and you’ll fly into the air and travel a great distance. The flightpath is set in stone though so make sure it doesn’t carry you into the circle before taking flight.Denoted by a black rocks with blue flames emanating from them, Spiritstreams launch you into the air to scale sheer cliffs and rock formations, similar to the Spiritspring in the original Elden Ring.Scale-Bearing Merchant The Scale-Bearing has a chance to appear during an Expedition and they will offer you one of three choices: arcane proficiency, an extra flask at the cost of lower maximum HP, and a passive that increases the amount of Runes you’ll earn.Marked as small orbs sided by a beetle, Teardrop Scarabs drop Talisman when defeated. Like in Elden Ring, Talismans grant buffs and perks that will remain throughout the rest of the Expedition as long as you have them equipped.Should you come across a map and interact with it, notably in a Fort, it will reveal nearby treasure. These spots are marked by chests on the map and are a source of items and weapons, including the occasional Smithing Stone.After you complete your first successful Tricephalos Expedition and defeat Gladius, Beast of Night, you’ll unlock Shifting Earth events. These drastically change a portion of Limveld with the terrain morphing to one of four themes. They are best viewed as optional dungeons that will take up to a full day to complete, but are the source of unique rewards, including Legendary weapon upgrades and powerful buffs. Shifting Earth events will disappear after several successful Expeditions or can be skipped entirely by passing time in the Waiting Room in the Roundtable Hold. You can track any active Shifting Earth event in the Expedition menu. Here’s a breakdown of the four possible Shifting Earth event themes:A large volcanic crater will show up in the north of Limveld. Possible enemies include Lava Slimes, Fire Monks, Magma Wyrms, Fallingstar Beasts, and Valiant Gargoyles. As you delve deeper into the crater, you’ll come across tougher enemies, but make it through to the end and you’ll gain access to a unique Smithing Stable that lets you upgrade one weapon to Legendary Rarity.Located in the northwest of Limveld, the Mountaintop is a towering, icy peak. It’s teeming with enemies that wield frost and magic. Scale to the very top of the mountain and you’ll unlock a permanent frostbite debuff and bonus damage against dragons, useful for Nightlord bosses like the Caligo, Miasma of Night in the Fissure in the Fog Expedition.The Rotted Woods event spawns in the southeast of Limveld and consists of a wooded expanse corrupted by Scarlet Rot. Much like the Abyssal Woods in the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, your Nightfarer will accumulate the Scarlet Rot ailment the longer you spend in the Rotted Woods. Your task here is to find a map in a fort that will lead you to a passive debuff that grants immunity to Scarlet Rot.The final Shifting Earth event takes place in the southwest of Limveld. It stands as a massive city that’s more of a puzzle than anything else. Getting a solid lay of the land is a feat in itself. Using Spiristreams, you’ll need to ascend the city to reach a temple containing a passive reward that grants one free death, usefully for the upcoming Nightlord boss fight.Video Gamer is reader-supported.
