“I feel the charity is more important than ever now with a lot of the hospitality industry on its knees and businesses closing at a faster rate than ever. It is great to know that there is help out there for people in need.”
Glasgow’s Michelin star chef Graeme Cheevers is working to help others in the industry cope with the stress of kitchen life – he’s taken on a new role as ambassador for hospitality staff charity The Ben.
"I was able to not worry or stress about keeping a roof over my head and I was able to buy some food. Without their help and support, I would have lost my house, and would not have been able to feed myself. I was in a very dark place and without the help and kindness of the Ben and Chris. The Ben’s Chris Gardner, who has run the charity for 36 years, said: “It’s fantastic that we’re welcoming two of Scotland’s top chefs on board as ambassadors.
They have given out more than £6 million in individual grants over the last 40 years and they also leap into action immediately when needed – such as The Clutha tragedy or the immediate closure of the Virgin hotel, supporting newly jobless staff and even helping secure new work. Chef Dean Banks runs restaurants in Edinburgh and St Andrews as well as online home delivery businesses Haar At Home and Waagyu Burger and two spirits brands, Mond Vodka and Lunun Gin.
“I will absolutely help all I can with the incredible work The Ben do and I want to thank Chris, Warren, Graham and the team for their trust.”
