The GBU-39 has been used in Gaza in what the IDF says were precision strikes against militant targets. US military officials say the relatively small bombs, weighing about 250lb , are better suited to dense urban environments such as in Gaza. It is described by manufacturer Boeingover the less-precise 2,000lb munitions, such as the MK-84 – which the US also provides to the IDF – out of concern for Palestinian civilians.

In another widely-reported incident on 26 May, the precision bomb is thought to have been used in an Israeli strike, where at least 45 people were killed. Israel said it was a “targeted” strike against two Hamas militants, using “the smallest munition” Israeli fighter jets can use, although Mr NetanyahuJanes, the defence intelligence firm, confirmed evidence of GBU-39 in the May and June strikes.

He warned of the risks of the military becoming “more comfortable using it”, as it may have the counterintuitive effect of raising civilian harm.“Judging from the outside, there are several strikes that have been made in recent months that don’t look like they would pass the collateral harm test in a modern Western military,” he said.

“In stark contrast to Hamas’s intentional attacks on Israeli men, women and children, the IDF follows international law and takes feasible precautions to mitigate civilian harm,” an IDF spokesperson said. The mounting death toll in Gaza, with more than 40,000 reported killed, has fuelled debate on Western complicity in potential violations of international humanitarian law, leading to some nations, including the UK,“We are way beyond the point of limiting certain specific items.
