Bumping into your own cat strolling around the neighbourhood is never not funny, but since moving to the prettiest enclave of north London the experience has become absurd. Back when we lived on an unlovely estate in Hackney she was just an everyday tabby, but with relocation she has become a Primrose Hill cat, worthy of starring in total strangers’ Instagram posts.
He was perfectly lovely, despite having no idea what I was talking about. But it’s the “getting here eventually” bit I can’t stop thinking about. Is this it, can I stop yearning, is peace to be found now? I am a wistful person, always looking at properties for sale and wondering, wondering. That sense of the possibilities of elsewhere always remains. But what happens when you run out of elsewheres? When finally, this might be as good as it gets — that you did it, you won the location lottery.
