Intel 's aspirations to challenge Nvidia and AMD in the AI accelerator market suffered a significant setback on Thursday with the cancellation of its Falcon Shores GPU architecture. This marks another instance of Intel scrapping a high-end GPU project, following the demise of Ponte Vecchio, Rialto Bridge, and now Falcon Shores . Initially slated for a 2024 release, Falcon Shores was expected to combine the strengths of Intel 's Xe Graphics technology with the AI prowess of its Gaudi platform.
However, the project has been shelved, pushing Intel's next GPU architecture, codenamed Jaguar Shores, at least a year, if not two, away from its debut. This continuous string of setbacks raises concerns about Intel's ability to effectively compete in the rapidly evolving AI hardware landscape.Despite this setback, Intel remains invested in the AI domain through its Gaudi3 accelerators. Launched earlier in 2024, Gaudi3 boasts impressive performance capabilities, offering 1,835 teraFLOPS of dense floating-point performance at either 8- or 16-bit precision. For compute-bound workloads, it outperforms Nvidia's H100 and H200 by nearly two times. Its 128GB of HBM2e memory with 3.7 TBps of bandwidth enables it to handle larger models and deliver higher throughput for memory-bound tasks, such as inference. However, Gaudi3 faces challenges from competing platforms like AMD's MI325X and Nvidia's Grace CPUs, which offer superior capacity, bandwidth, and overall performance.
