A turbulent week led to the Royal Exchange Theatre cancelling its autumn production
It was billed as an 'electrifying adaptation' of a William Shakespeare classic. The Royal Exchange Theatre 's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream was set in modern Manchester to a drum 'n' bass soundtrack.
The Manchester Evening News understands those who had tickets to the September 6 preview performance were told it had been cancelled hours before it was due to take place. The Royal Exchange Theatre confirmed the cancellation followed an injury suffered by a cast member, with no understudies available.
Behind the scenes, problems were mounting. Actors' union Equity and Stage Directors UK, which represents directors, confirmed they had stepped in to try and resolve a 'disagreement' between the company and theatre management. It's believed that the row which unions stepped into was not the only issue that led to its cancellation. However, the Royal Exchange Theatre has remained tight-lipped over the exact nature of the problems faced so far.
"What shame," another said. "I booked for my daughters birthday. Hope the cast member is ok and they can get the show up and running another time."
