Gad's book, In Gad We Trust, reveals his perspective on the scene and the director's initial intention for a 'gay moment' that ultimately fell short of expectations.
Josh Gad , known for his role as Olaf in the Frozen franchise, recently shed light on the controversy surrounding his portrayal of LeFou in Disney 's 2017 live-action Beauty and the Beast. Gad revealed in his book, In Gad We Trust, that he felt the character's representation was insufficient to meet the director's, Bill Condon's, expectations of a groundbreaking 'exclusively gay moment.
' The brief scene in which LeFou dances with a man, according to Gad, fell short of the hype generated by Condon's pre-release statements.During the production of the film, Gad recounted a conversation with Condon and the screenwriters, Stephen Chbosky and Evan Spiliotopoulos, where they explored the nature of LeFou's devotion to Gaston, played by Luke Evans. Ultimately, they concluded that LeFou's admiration for Gaston stemmed from deep-seated love, appreciation, and belief, rather than sexual desire. Gad stated that while the filmmakers aimed to delve into LeFou's sexuality, it wasn't intended to be a central theme driving the film. He expressed that he would have been receptive to the audience interpreting the dance scene as a 'sweet exclusively gay moment,' but the director's emphasis on it set unrealistic expectations.Gad lamented that the focus shifted solely onto the brief 'gay moment,' overshadowing other aspects of the film. He pointed out that the moment itself was fleeting and lacked the depth to warrant the significant attention it received. He also revealed that Condon felt 'awful' about the backlash generated by his initial comments about the scene. Despite the controversy, Beauty and the Beast became a box office success, grossing over $1.26 billion worldwide. It also received two Oscar nominations in 2018
