Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp speaks about the Luton Town 'fairytale' and how football is changing ahead of Premier League trip
If there's one rival Premier League boss who can appreciate the surprise progress of Luton Town, it's Jurgen Klopp.
Luton face a similar battle to remain in the top flight, and entertain Liverpool on Sunday afternoon having won only one - a 2-1 triumph at Everton in September - of their opening 10 games to drop into the relegation zone alongside fellow promoted sides Burnley and Sheffield United. Quite whether Luton's story would be possible in the future would have been called into question had the European Super League got off the ground after its surprise announcement in April 2021. Klopp and his squad made public their resistance to the closed-shop initiative which, along with a major fan backlash, prompted Liverpool to swiftly withdraw with the other invited Premier League clubs.
"I love that Luton are playing in the Premier League, absolutely, that's fantastic. But all the things we have to and want to change in football for the future, if they always depend on there being room for a way through for one club, that hinders development rather than helps. Liverpool are expected to make a raft of changes from the midweek League Cup win at Bournemouth, with goalkeeper Alisson Becker, defenders Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch and forwards Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota all pressing for a start.
"I wouldn't say Luton are dangerous for us because of their fairytale," he says. "We've had time to prepare for that. But I've been on the other side of it. It's nice and a fairytale, but it ended a lot of times for us with the first whistle! 'Oh great, we're playing Bayern!' and then it suddenly doesn't feel that great.
