Ribble Valley, Pendle and Rossendale councils are among those reflecting on the anniversary and planning to mark the occasion
Lancashire borough councils are marking their 50th anniversaries, stemming from their creation in April 1974 under local government changes across the country.
This is reflected, for example, in Ribbley Valley Council's coat of arms which includes a red Lancashire and white Yorkshire rose. Today, Lancashire is often described as the last remaining two-tier county in northern England, with the exception of Blackpool and Blackburn councils which are stand-alone unitary bodies.North Yorkshire now has one unitary council after seven districts, also launched in 1974, were abolished last year.
At the same time, the new council decommissioned the former Clitheroe Gasworks. The gas-holder was so toxic that it rotted the removal equipment and topsoil so contaminated that a microbiological process was used to reclaim the site. Conservative Coun Stephen Atkinson, the council's political leader. said: “We may be a small district authority but we have been punching above our weight for years. We have no debt, significant reserves, the lowest district council tax in Lancashire and one of the lowest in the UK.
“These are significant achievements built on many years of careful financial management, as well as the skill and dedication of staff, who know their jobs inside-out and deliver first-class services.
