Fraudsters have about half a dozen different scams they can attempt using fake checks.
Fake checks continue to be one of the most common tools used to commit fraud against consumers. Pennsylvania State Police in Lancaster County said a man was targeted in this scam with what appeared to be a certified check. The Narvon resident was selling a boat. The scammer sent him a check for $9,995, even though the asking price for the boat was $7,500.The scammer claimed the check was a mistake and asked for the seller to return the overpayment through a wire transfer.
A few days after that check was deposited, the victim’s bank determined the check was fake.Crooks continue to use this scam because once you deposit a check, banks must make the funds available within 24 to 48 hours. The scammers want you to act quickly to return the money they claim you owe before the bank figures out the check was fake – leaving you on the hook for thousands that you have to give back to the bank.
