Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust paid out £500k for a total of 33 staff assault claims over five years
'Nobody should have to feel threatened at work – especially hard-working, vital NHS staff.' That is the view of top solicitor Patrick Mallon - but sadly, this is exactly the situation facing many medics in Lancs. The picture, it seems, is especially concerning at Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust, which has paid out £500k for a total of 33 staff assault claims in five years - the third highest total across 236 NHS trusts in England.
The trust, which is based in Preston, provides mental health, learning disability, autism and community based services. The East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust – which runs several hospitals including the Royal Blackburn and Burnley General – and Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust recorded 14 claims and incidents of staff assault but none that resulted in damages being paid out.
