The senseless murder of John Alan West resulted in the last executions in Britain 60 years ago
It has been 60 years since the last convicted murderer in Britain was sentenced to death. Peter Anthony Allen was taken from his cell at HMP Liverpool and hanged at 8am on August 13 1964. Six decades later, the case of 21-year-old Wallasey-born killer Allen and his accomplice Gwynne Owen Evans, 24, remains a significant point in legal history as the last executions ever carried out in Britain.
Unable or unwilling to earn the money through legitimate means , Allen and Evans decided to break into John West's home in Workington and steal it. The full story of what happened on the night of April 6 1964 is not - and probably never will be - known. But John West's body was found, battered with an iron bar and stabbed through the heart, in the early hours of the following day after a neighbour, who had been woken by a suspicious noise, called the police.
