Italian football club Lazio has ended its relationship with long-time eagle handler Juan Bernabe following a social media scandal involving explicit images related to his penile prosthesis surgery.
Lazio have severed ties with their long-time eagle handler , Juan Bernabe , following a social media controversy. Bernabe, who had flown Olimpia , a Canadian golden eagle, around the Stadio Olimpico since 2010, shared explicit images of his penile prosthesis implant surgery online. This sparked outrage across Italy, leading to Lazio announcing the immediate termination of their relationship with Bernabe.
The club's statement emphasized that Bernabe's actions were incompatible with their values, acknowledging the sadness fans would feel at losing the pre-match eagle display. Despite this, Lazio insisted that associating themselves with Bernabe, particularly with the symbolic eagle, was no longer tenable. This isn't the first time Bernabe has faced controversy. In 2019, he was suspended by Lazio after being caught performing what appeared to be fascist salutes and singing in praise of Benito Mussolini.Bernabe has since defended his decision to share the explicit images, claiming he did it for medical purposes and posted them on a private profile. He stated that he had the surgery to improve his sexual performance and doesn't regret his actions. Bernabe also defended his past actions, stating that he had no regrets about his previous controversies.
