Former Leeds director has finally got the deal he wanted to do from Man Utd
Leeds United were certainly not against taking a risk on young players in the days before 49ers Enterprises took control of the club. There may have been some significant misses as well as the hits under Director of Football Victor Orta, with having a gamble on a young player something of a theme.
It has now emerged that one deal Orta tried to get done which didn't work out was the capture of winger Mateo Mejia from Manchester United. It's now being reported that before he departed the club in 2023, Orta was trying to agree a deal with the Red Devils to bring in the young Spaniard as a new option for Leeds on the wing for the future.
Still only 21-years-old now, Mejia came through the academy ranks at Old Trafford and after Leeds' pursuit, signed a new deal at the club in June 2023, only to have left by January of this year after Orta finally got his man. Now Director of Football at Sevilla, Orta signed Mejia for Sevilla's reserve team Sevilla Atletico.
After impressing in the second half of last season he's now been elevated to the first team and has made his debut this season. Given the success Leeds had last year with wingers, it's unlikely Mejia would have made much difference last season, but there's no denying an extra option right now would be handy given the injury problems at Elland Road.
