Low-income families could be eligible for the government's Support for Mortgage Interest scheme, providing help with mortgage or housing costs
Thousands of families who own a home or have bought a shared ownership property, could be entitled to cash help from the government. The cash support comes through a Department for Work and Pensions scheme known as Support for Mortgage Interest . The financial help is available to people claiming certain benefits, including Universal Credit, and is worth around £7,320. It provides help towards interest payments on your mortgage or loans you’ve taken out to repair or improve your home.
However, if you’re getting Pension Credit or were claiming another qualifying benefit before January 2009 and were below State Pension age, this is lowered to up to £100,000. How do I apply? When you apply for a qualifying benefit, you’ll be asked questions about your housing costs to see if you qualify for SMI. If you want to apply you can fill in a form to send to your lender.
