Liverpool John Lennon Airport will be facilitating four return flights on Christmas Day, with Wizz Air providing the sole service. Airport staff will be on duty to ensure smooth operations despite the holiday. Kellie Johnson, a 29-year veteran at the airport, shares her experience of working Christmas Day.
Liverpool John Lennon Airport will be welcoming four return flights on Christmas Day, with Wizz Air operating out of the airport on December 25. The ultra-low cost airline is the only operator to offer flights to or from the city airport on Christmas Day, meaning staff at the airport will be there to keep things running smoothly.
Only eight flights will operate throughout the afternoon and evening of December 25, in the form of four arrivals and four departures to and from a number of destinations in Eastern Europe. One of the staff members who will be working Christmas Day at the airport is Kellie Johnson. Kellie, from Widnes , has worked at John Lennon Airport for 29 years, and is airport duty manager at the Speke site. She is one of six managers at the airport and said their rota works on a rolling basis which her colleagues stick to regardless of big occasions like Christmas. This year, Kellie will be working the night shift at the airport, starting at 7pm and ending at 7am on Boxing Day. But despite the unsociable hours, she will still be cooking Christmas dinner for her family before heading into work. She said: 'It's only five of us this year. Usually I have all the family but a few of my nieces and nephews are travelling, so it's only us and my mum this year. It's a good job it's my first night shift of four, not my second or third, because then I'd have to rely on my husband cooking the Christmas dinner!' Kellie told the ECHO: 'Some years I get it off, some years I don't. No one likes to work Christmas Day - you want to be at home with your family, but I think because I was off last year, it's my turn to do it this year. It was a bit harder when my kids were little - it's not easy leaving them when it's all magical.' And while working on Christmas Day isn't a welcome prospect for anyone, Kellie said she's glad to know there will be a number of flights coming in and out of the airport as it means the night shift will keep her bus
