This year marks 25 years since the first Slavery Remembrance Day commemorations in Liverpool
Liverpool is set to “pause and remember” the many lives impacted by the abhorrent act of slavery. It was 25 years ago in 1999, when the city first coordinated commemorative events to mark Slavery Remembrance Day. The date, which is recognised worldwide, is seen as a day to remember the lasting legacies of the transatlantic slave trade. This month will be no different, with the annual remembrance day taking place on August 23.
Symposium: Space and Place- Building on the Past - Wednesday, August 21, at 2 pm at the University of Liverpool Curators, scholars, and community-based knowledge makers will reflect on the buildings and spaces connected to the representation of slavery and its legacies. From Granby to Pitt Street, it will focus on how past experiences and new practices can inclusively and equitably shape future museum design and development.
