Baking icon Mary Berry has weighed in on the age-old debate of whether to store eggs in the fridge or at room temperature, offering her expert advice in her latest book.
The heated debate about the best way to keep eggs fresh - countertop vs fridge - has finally been settled according to baking pro Mary Berry. There's a cross-pond divide, with Brits tending to leave their eggs out at room temperature and Americans opting to chill them in the refrigerator. The discussion on egg storage has been ongoing, with no clear right answer.
Until a piece of advice from Mary Berry in her book, 'Mary Berry's Complete Cookbook' - in which she advocates one method over the other, reports the Express . She advised: 'Store eggs in their box in the refrigerator (away from strong foods so that they do not absorb flavours and odours through their shells.)' If you place them pointed end down, the yolk will remain centred in the white. Always use them by their use-by date.' According to Mary, keeping them in the fridge at temperatures around 4C or lower can significantly extend their shelf life. While it's also fine to stash your eggs on the countertop, maintaining them at a consistent and cool temperature is essential for freshness. A notable tip, however, is to always place eggs on a fridge shelf and never in the door to prevent spoiling. Jenna Kelly, a specialist from Essential Food Hygiene UK, said: 'It is recommended that they are stored in a fridge as soon as possible avoiding any change in temperature as it can cause condensation on the shell which in turn can cause bacterial issues.' According to Mary, it is fine to store eggs in the freezer where they will last six months. However, it is usually recommended to use them after four months to make sure they are as fresh as possible. In 'Mary Berry's Ultimate Cookbook', she wrote: 'Shelled raw eggs freeze very successfully, and can be stored for up to six months
