The school system says it works by looking for certain type metals and shapes.

The Mobile County Public School System says they’re getting closer to announcing potential plans for an extra layer of security.) -The Mobile County Public School System says they’re getting closer to announcing potential plans for an extra layer of security. One thing that could be part of the new plan is a weapons detection system like this.

It’s different than a regular metal detector which the school system says they tried at a smaller school, but it took so long to get all of the students through the entrance that it delayed school start time by almost an hour. A system like this can take around 4,000 people an hour. If someone passes through with something that could be a weapon an alarm sounds and the camera system highlights any areas of concern on a nearby screen to let security personnel know where to look.

The school system says it’s still early on so it’s unclear if they’ll use these as part of the plan or how much they would cost if they did, but school board members say they aren’t worrying too much about a price tag.
