Nearly 20 years later, Claudine Cheng and other organizers seek to continue 'moving forward together'
The City’s Asian American and Pacific Islander Month celebration began on a whim nearly 20 years ago.
“It was just spontaneous,” Cheng said of her conversation with Newsom, who’s now the governor of California. “It came to my mind. It was totally unplanned. Just serendipity, I guess. I had no idea what was about to happen.”Wednesday’s reception annually marks the start of a monthlong celebration filled with Asian American film screenings, author readings, cuisine, dances, and other performing arts across every corner of San Francisco.
Unofficially, according to the people that work closely with her, she’s the one who makes the festival — and any cause she champions — go. Michael Lambert, San Francisco’s city librarian, who hosts many of the month’s events, called her a “force” and “a passionate leader and community connector.” “I became more aware that we need to have our voices heard,” Cheng said. “Most of us didn’t grow up learning to be vocal about what concerns us.”
