Young people under 30 are behind a spike in demand for private health care, reversing a years-long trend.
A record 55 per cent of the population now has some form of private health insurance cover, according to APRA. But Dr David says more and more young people are turning to the private sector for services that either aren't covered by Medicare or that have long wait times in the public hospital system. "My sense from industry is, among young people in particular, it reflects a desire for better mental health supports as well as general options that private health insurance gives you."
The condition, in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows in other parts of the body, can be painful and impact a person's ability to work, study or socialise.
