A 29-year-old mother, Deveca Rose, has been sentenced to life in prison after tragically killing her four twin sons in a house fire. Rose left the children locked inside their squalid home while she went shopping for non-essential items days before Christmas. Neighbors heard the boys desperately screaming 'there's a fire' as flames engulfed the terraced house in Sutton, South London . Tragically, firefighters were unable to save the boys, and they were all declared dead in the evening.
The Old Bailey heard that a discarded cigarette or upturned tea light ignited a pile of rubbish, sparking the blaze. Rose had allowed the family home to fall into a deplorable state, with buckets and pots used as toilets, human excrement on the floor, and rubbish piled in the bath. CCTV footage showed Rose attempting to shop with the children at Sainsbury's an hour before the fire, where she was heard screaming, shouting, and swearing at them. She initially claimed to have left the children with a woman named Jade, leading firefighters to search for her inside the burning house. In a victim impact statement, the boys' father, Dalton Hoath, expressed the unimaginable pain of losing his four sons. He stated that it was 'the worst day of my life' and described the overwhelming grief that has consumed him. Hoath shared that he cried constantly, remained in bed, and even contemplated suicide in the aftermath of the tragedy. He said, 'I will never recover from losing my funny, beautiful boys. I have to fight for all of us left behind and live with this massive pain in my heart before I meet them again.' He added, 'The thought of them crying and screaming out will haunt me forever. I'm afraid I will never be able to forgive… I would like to say their favourite word - why? Just why?'
