A serious crash involving a car and a motorbike near Simister Island caused major traffic disruption on the M60, M62, and M66 this morning. The motorcyclist sustained serious injuries, but they are not believed to be life-threatening. The northbound M66 was closed for a period of time, leading to long queues and delays.
A motorcyclist has been rushed to hospital following a serious crash near Simister Island. Drivers have faced widespread disruption across the M60 , M62 and M66 this morning (December 18) following the collision near Bury at around 7.09am. Greater Manchester Police said the crash involved a car and a motorbike. The motorcyclist suffered serious injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening, GMP added.
The northbound M66 was closed for around 45 minutes between Simister Island and Pilsworth following the crash. The incident also led to long delays on the M60 and M62. National Highways warned motorists of queues lasting more than an hour. Traffic was unable to join the M66 from the M60 clockwise for around two hours. Images from the crash scene showed several police vehicles in attendance, along with an ambulance. Debris could also be seen in the road following the collision. Long queues formed on the M60 clockwise, tailing back beyond junction 12 on the M62, at the Eccles Interchange. There were queues approaching the scene on the M60 anticlockwise, backing up towards junction 21 at Chadderton. Drivers also faced delays on the M62 westbound from Rochdale and on the opposite side of the M66, as traffic slowed down past the crash scene. Motorists also faced heavy traffic on the A56 through Bury and Whitefield as drivers avoided the M66. One lane initially reopened on the M66, while emergency services remained on the scene. All lanes reopened at around 9.15am
